Q & A with Dana Bronson,
the Originator of Virtual Moonlighting 1) Describe Virtual Moonlighting and your role in it. I always liked to write things. Not necessarily stories, just stuff like diarys or travel journals. Anyway, my sister was a fan of Scarecrow and Mrs. King and out of boredom one night we looked it up on the internet. You would not believe the fan community for that show. And there were a bunch of sites dedicated to SMK "fanfiction". It turns out these were original stories written by fans. Cool idea! (and maybe a little warped) Being a warped individual myself, I instantly thought of Moonlighting. About that time I had joined the ML list, so I thought I would ask around for some Moonlighting Fanfiction. There was nothing so I tried to write some myself and those first stories are what became the Unicorn Press magazine. After that I was sick of just reading my stories (I knew what happened) so I set out to recruit some new writers. And this idea was born. It made sense because everyone laments on how Moonlighting ended. Why not just change it? So I hooked up with Diane and Sarah and the three of us really did it together. The Three Virtual GGCs! Originally it was this whole community, and we were to have this virtual Emmy awards with other "Virtual shows". But that never materialized. Anyway, we had a good "viewership" We would get a few hundred readers a week. It seems to still be going strong. I left after the sixth season and now others have taken it over. 2) Tell me a bit about you.... where are you from? Are you employed and if so what is your career? Do you have a family/children/husband? My name is Danielle Bronson. I am 28 and I live in Rochester NY. I have been married for four years to my husband Dylan, and I have a 13 month old son named Tanner. I am a stay-at-home-mom but I used to be a gym teacher in the inner city. Now I coach a ski team and The Rochester Dolphins Synchronized Swim team, both part time. (By the way we are writing a routine to Big Man on Mulberry Street, and I will be proudly displaying it on the Dolphin's website.) 3) How long have you been a ML fan? For as long as I can remember. My first Moonlighting episode I taped was "Twas The Episode Before Christmas" in 1985. I was 11. 4) What is/are your favorite ML episode(s) and why?
![]() I also love "The Man Who Cried Wife" just because I think it is a gift to the loyal viewer. All that episode is about is trying to explain and make the notion of "passion" tangible. And you can't do it. If you are just a casual viewer, you take the episode for face value. A guy beat the crap out of his wife and attempts to explain it as "an act of passion" or "getting lost in the moment." He lost control, and Maddie and David disagree about it. But what this episode is really saying is that passion in its purest form teeters on the ledge of dangerous, lethal even. Maddie and David are teetering on that ledge and one false move....Not that it would be physically deadly..but maybe emotionally crippling???? That's why that slap is sooo good. Potent passion. I thinks that warrants the phrase "Hurts so Good." ![]() ![]() Episode I hate? "Symphony" I just didn't buy it. The date, the bet. It irks me. 5) If you could have had the final episode end any way you wanted, what would that have been? You know, people defend this episode (myself included) and say "The writers meant to put them back together with the Annie arc but they were cancelled and they ran out of time." Bull!. I think they could have rectified the situation, reward the loyal viewers as it were, with one scene. I would have been happy with a scene with the general dialog going like this. "Maddie, I never wanted Annie I wanted you. She was the only way I could get your attention. It was a last ditch effort to get us back (Yadda Yadda)." Maddie says "Yeah I still love you too. And I hate that I do but I can't help it. (Yadda Yadda)" They kiss. The end. I didn't need marriage or anything. Actually, I like the ambiguous state of I-love-you-so-much-that-it-f@*!s-me up. That is so romantic to me. 6) Are you actively involved in any of the other online "Moonlighting" fan activities? Not right now. I have just been to busy. Plus, I have not been in the best health since I was pregnant with my son. But now that all my organs work again, I am getting back in the Moonlighting game and looking for stuff to "help the ML cause." 7) Why are Moonlighting and the characters so special to you? I found Moonlighting when I was young, and it kept me company on the road when I was travelling for ski races. I was a junior national slalom racer, and I travelled everywhere with those tapes because they reminded me of home. David and Maddie could always make me laugh and anyone else I made watch them with me. Funny story. I remember staying at the sports academy in Lake Placid and a few guys from the Austrian ski jumping team were staying there too. It was a community TV so they watched some of my tapes with me. They barely spoke English so they had to watch the same episode like four times just so they could understand it all. " All they kept saying that whole week was "Great Googly Moogly!" Plus I think they dug Cybill. 8) Any other comments you care to make? I am proud to be obsessed with Moonlighting. There are worse things to be obsessed with (I would think). |
