Couple Chemistry:
"...an elusive, magical quality that exists between two actors playing a couple who are sexually attracted to each other"

What is screen chemistry? Well, I think it's an elusive, magical quality that exists between two actors playing a couple who are sexually attracted to each other. Its main ingredients are flirtiness, considerable enjoyment of each other's company and displays of affection. Yes, it can be acted but what gives it a boost is if offscreen the actors do find each other attractive. (Did it fade in Series 5?). Bruce and Cybill/David and Maddie really had this. What helped them? Witty and amusing dialogue, contrasting personalities and, last but not least, they were both very attractive and appealing to look at. Maddie was the spoilt, ice maiden blonde and David the "happy go lucky" macho guy with a very tender-hearted interior.

There are many, many examples of this "chemistry" but 3 favourites of mine are when David tells Maddie she's jealous of Gillian (Maddie denies this), when David grabs Maddie's hand in the garage in "Witness to the Execution" (the way he looks at her) and the row in Maddie's office at the beginning of "Big Man on Mulberry Street" when he's hungover and pretends he nearly got run over by a truck. Her frustration with him is very amusing. Of course many other screen couples have displayed chemistry but these two are about my favourite. There will they or won't they storyline was just irresistible.

David and Maddie from Knowing HerDavid has a way of looking at Maddie....from Witness for the Execution
